AFLAC

To the Members of the APWU,

There is some important news regarding your AFLAC benefits that I wanted all of you to be aware of. AFLAC has introduced a new Cancer policy that has increased treatment payouts and updated benefits that correspond with new procedures and technologies in the treatment of Cancer today.

If you already have Aflac’s Cancer Indemnity Plan: Your plan and rate is not being affected by this introduction. If you choose, AFLAC is offering a loyalty discount to anyone who currently has a cancer policy that has been in effect for 12 months; that wishes to convert to the new policy. This can be done once your current policy has been in force for 12 months. Please contact us if you would like to make a comparison. In addition, please let me know if you or a family member have had a cancer screening and have not used your Wellness Benefit.

If you do not have a cancer policy PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: While the current cancer policy is not age related, the new one is. The price difference if you are 46 or older is substantial as you can see from the chart below:

Rate Bi-Weekly Individual 1 Parent Family Primary/Spouse 2 Parent Family

Current Cancer Policy 17.31 21.32 29.72 29.72

New- Age 18-35 13.68 13.68 26.46 26.46

New Age 36-45 19.74 19.74 36.42 36.42

New- Age 46-55 26.58 26.58 50.16 50.16

New- Age 56-70 32.88 32.88 63.66 63.66

New policy rates are approximate; many options are available on the new plan to customize your coverage. Rate comparisons are using comparable coverage to the new plan. they may vary slightly from state to state.

While the coverage is stronger, the age bracket levels warrant careful consideration! By getting the current plan, you protect your family while minimizing your investment. No change is happening to rates on the current plan.If you would like to sign up for the current Cancer policy and get locked in to the current rate, you only have until October 20th and then it will be pulled from the market. After the 20th, it will no longer be available.

Please contact me with any questions you have concerning this matter.

COLA Raise Shows Value of a Union Contract

APWU News Bulletin #08-2007, Aug. 29, 2007 | PDF

The $686 salary increase that will be reflected in APWU members’ paychecks Sept. 21 demonstrates the ongoing value of the union contract, said APWU President      William Burrus. “With the one-level upgrade for all APWU-represented positions in February,” he added, “the negotiated raises will amount to approximately four percent over a period of five months.”

Burrus described the September Cost-of-Living Adjustment and the upgrades early next year as important illustrations of a good collective bargaining agreement and a strong union.

“COLA raises have made important contributions to our members’ wages,” he said. “The $686 increase will be one of the largest in our history and it presents us with an excellent opportunity to build the union. I encourage union activists to use the occasion of this raise to seek out non-members and persuade them to join us.”

Burrus also said that it would be an ideal time for APWU leaders to ask members to become more involved in union activities and to contribute to COPA, the union’s political action fund. Burrus said he will be sending invitations to join the APWU to all non-members covered by the national agreement, timed to coincide with the raise. Solicitations for contributions to COPA also will be mailed to APWU members.

“I hope that local and state leaders will assist in these efforts,” Burrus said.

The COLA increase will be the third-largest since 2000. (APWU-represented employees received an $812 cost-of-living raise a year ago, and a $728 COLA in September 2005.) The current adjustment will amount to a 33 cents per hour increase, or $26.40 per pay period, and it represents a 1.4 percent increase in the salary of an APWU-represented employee at Grade 5, Step O.

The February upgrade has been calculated to be the equivalent of a raise of approximately 2.6 percent. Updated payscales will be distributed in the September/October edition of The American Postal Worker magazine.

                         Be Union - Buy Union

The Iowa Postal Workers Union is a part of the American Postal Workers Union (APWU) AFL-CIO.

The Iowa Postal Workers Union (IPWU) affirms its belief in a single union of all Postal Workers in non-supervisory levels and will work to achieve this goal.

The IPWU educates our membership through use of seminars and specials class as well as through media outlets such as the Postal Solidarity (The Iowa Postal Worker paper is a part of this joint effort.)

The IPWU  works towards educating the general public on the history of the Labor Movement.

The IPWU will work for the election of candidates - regardless of party - who favor pasage of improved legislation in the interest of all labor. To work for the repeal of laws which are unjust to labor and Postal workers, such as the denial of the right to strike and denial of the right to support political cadidates of their choice.

The IPWU will represent all members in every way possible with issues dealing with, but not limited to grievances.
