Yesterday, David Steiner, the Postmaster General gave some disturbing evidence to the House Government Operations sub-committee.
After decades of bad postal policy decisions, we are at a crossroads. He expects the USPS to run out of money by February of next year.
The idea of the Postal Service having to shutter the doors and cease operations is totally unacceptable. It would hurt every single community in this country in ways that are hard to put into words.
There is a solution, though.
The Postmaster General laid out a series of commonsense policy fixes that Congress can put in place. They would buy the Postal Service enough time to build a sustainable future and they must happen as soon as possible. You can find out more about how we got here and what we must do next, here.
In the coming months, we will have to fight hard to make sure that our public Postal Service gets the breathing space it needs. We also need to set the agenda with our vision of a Post Office that meets our community needs.
Many corporate interests are looking at this crisis as an opportunity to sell off the Post Office, piece-by-piece, to big business. We can't let that happen.
