In Response to the meeting restrictions that have been imposed as a result of the COVID 19 Pandemic the IPWU Executive Board has taken emergency action to facilitate the constitutionally mandated State Convention and Elections. It has been decided that this Convention will be conducted both as an in person meeting and via ZOOM in a simultaneous broadcast. This Convention will be condensed to a single day event with all committee work performed in advance of the Convention via ZOOM and email communications by the committee members. The new date for the convention will be Friday September 11, 2020. Delegates may participate in person on that date by traveling to the APWU DMI Area Local Union Hall or they may connect via ZOOM depending on their comfort level and current public health situation.
The Member At Large (MAL) delegates will be selected by an MAL caucus. To facilitate the selection of these delegates a MAL ZOOM Meeting will be scheduled every Sunday in July at 4:00 PM. These meetings will provide the MAL members with information on the convention process, assist in identifying small office issues, and facilitate the development of resolutions specific to the needs of members in the small offices. These meetings will also provide access to interested members across the state and allow the participants to become familiar with one another before determining up to 5 individuals they would like to represent their interests in the general convention. Members At Large will need to provide their email addresses and phone numbers to email@example.com so that appropriate ZOOM invitations can be sent to them.
Credentials will be mailed to all Locals in accordance with the IPWU Constitution. Locals are encouraged to select their delegates and submit their credentials as soon as possible so the convention committees can be determined. Delegates that wish to participate remotely must include their email address and phone number on their official credentials. Since most of the convention work must be done in advance of the convention the following time line is recommended:
July- Member at Large meetings,
Resolutions submitted before July 31
Delegate Credentials returned before July 31
August- Committee Chairs selected and Committee Assignments determined
Committee meetings scheduled and resolutions perfected for Convention Consideration
Final Resolutions and Committee Report submitted no later than August 31
September- ZOOM Meeting scheduled to facilitate first round of nominations September 1-4
Convention booklet created. Electronic version to be emailed September 4
Hard copy convention booklets to be printed and made available September 11
The Executive Board continues to serve the membership and find the most democratic means of conducting business during this very unusual time. Adapting our rules to conform to state and city meeting mandates has been a challenge this year. However with the cooperation of all the Locals and delegates the convention can be held, elections conducted and our representation in the state strengthened.
It is hoped that credentials will be received no later than August 1st to provide the entire month of August for committee meetings.
